Kitchen Nightmares Bella Luna Update - Closed Already

On tonight's episode of Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay is in Easton, PA to help out Bella Luna Ristorante.  The restaurant is being run by a mother and her son.  The mother has no restaurant experience and does not want to take blame for anything.  They claim they are using fresh ingredients, when most of them are frozen.  Finally, when Gordon goes into the walk in refrigerator, he finds tons of rotten food.

Kitchen Nightmares visited Bella Luna Ristorante back in July of 2013 to film the episode, and I searched around the Internet to read stories, comments and reviews about Bella Luna Ristorane to get an idea of how the restaurant is doing since Gordon Ramsay visited, and here is what I found (note - all reviews are post Kitchen Nightmares):

The restaurant has already closed since Gordon visited, so here are some relevant links for the restaurant:
  • When Gordon came to Easton, the town was buzzing, and an article in a local paper has received over 200 comments. (Link)
  •
  • The restaurant closed late October/early November just 3 1/2 months after Gordon Ramsay came to the restaurant.  They claimed they didn't fail, but were forced out after a dispute with the landlord.  The landlord said they were not paying rent and locked the doors.  Rosaria said that business tripled after Gordon came, and they plan to reopen in another location.  The people commenting on the article are not surprised with the closing and had bad things to say about the restaurant. (Link)

  • Here were the Yelp reviews for the restaurant, which were mixed. (Link)
  • In 2012 the restaurant was sued by someone who fell on ice in their parking lot (Link )
  • The restaurant got in trouble last year for serving alcohol with an expired license. (Link)

Conclusion:

It sounds like the restaurant does not want to take responsibility for their closing and are trying to make it seem like everything was going fine.  The restaurant has been closed for about 6 months, so if they planned on reopening and finding another location, you would think they would have found one by now.  I doubt we see them open back up, but only time will tell...

Kitchen Nightmares - Kati Allo Update

In the second part of tonight's Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay is in Flushing, New York to help out a Greek restaurant called Kati Allo.  The restaurant is owned by a husband and wife whose marriage is falling apart due to problems at the restaurant.  The husband bought the restaurant about 14 years ago without consulting his wife first and they have been struggling recently.

Kitchen Nightmares visited Kati Allo back in July 2013 to film the episode, and I searched around the Internet to read stories, comments and reviews about Kati Allo to get an idea of how the restaurant is doing since Gordon Ramsay visited, and here is what I found (note - all reviews are post Kitchen Nightmares):

Positive Reviews:
  • "We were blown away the food was amazing. Very fresh and tasty. Reminded me of my moms cooking."
  • "Yay! They deliver again!  From the new menu I have tried the chicken kabob and it is delicious! The Mediterranean salad is yum and the gyros are now made fresh and sort of a cross between donner and gyro. The spinach pie is still the best I have ever taste"
  • "Haven't been here in a while and boy was that a mistake. The food is fresher and better than ever..Was never a fan of big menus unless I'm in a diner. Glad they shortened it....Good service, good food and very nice owners...Will be back"
  • "We've visited Kati Allo in the past and never thought it needed help! But we were pleased to see how far it's come with the upgrades. We will be returning (we were going to anyway) and recommending to family and friends."

Negative Reviews:
  • "The food is delicious - I was very pleased. However, their delivery time is very long (expect an hour wait) and they occasionally forget items....Their food may be good, but between forgetting items and their erratic schedule, it might not be worth it."
  • "The menu's changed and it's a REAL disappointment!!!!..Bring the old menu back!!!!!!"
  • "Kati Allo was once my favorite greek restaurant. Now that It was revamped by Gordon Ramsey and half the menu is missing its starting to fall off my list of healthy go to spots in Bayside."

Other News and Links:
  • Here is the Kati Allo website, which is a flash site with annoying music...
  • Here is the Kati Allo Facebook page
  • Their takeout and delivery menu states, "We are proud to introduce some authentic Greek dishes exclusively created for Kati Allo by the world famous chef Gordon Ramsay."  It also seems like they have kept the scaled down menu.
  • If you look at the Yelp reviews for Kati Allo before Gordon Ramsay came, there are A LOT of complaints and 1-star reviews regarding Groupon and restaurant.com deals.  Seems like the owners were adding the tip amounts on bills, refusing to honor deals, and giving different menus to people who had coupons.  This seemed to make a lot of people angry, and made them not want to come back.  I am not sure why you would offer deals like that and then not want to honor them.

Conclusion:

It seems like there are a lot of positive reviews about the food and that some people like the new menu.  Others (probably regulars) do not like the menu being smaller, which usually happens with these makeovers.  It seems that the owners have kept the advise of Gordon Ramsay to keep the menu smaller.

There were a few complaints about long delivery times, and a complaint about the restaurant not being open on a Tuesday despite the menu saying it was.  Couple this with the Groupon deals in the past, they may need to work on their customer service a bit.  If they can improve that, and they keep serving good food, they may have what it takes to turn around their restaurant.

UPDATE - Kati Allo closed in late April 2014 for renovations and never re-opened.  They closed shortly after their episode aired.

Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares: ISO "Hot" Restaurateurs

Chef Gordon Ramsay stoops lower still... Amazing...
It looks like Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares isn’t just about the restaurant anymore. According to The Daily Mirror, the Kitchen Nightmares’ star and executive producer has added a number of irrelevant questions to the Kitchen Nightmares contestant application. How much a contestant weighs, as well as their height, eye and hair color are just a few of the questions that have been added. But my favorites of all of them are these:
  • Have you ever had a restraining order filed against you?
  • Does your family have a history of depression?
  • Are you easily upset?

Actually, the one regarding a history of depression seems to be fair.

A friend of mine had filled out an application for Chef Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen (as a joke) and told me that they had similar questions on the application he filled out, which he thought was strange. Considering that Kitchen Nightmare’s is supposed to be focused on the restaurants and not the contestants, asking such personal questions doesn’t seem right.

Moreover, Chef Gordon Ramsay should be focused more on cleaning up his muddied image instead of adding to his laundry list of drama and evil doings.

Are those questions even legal? But then again, does he really care?

Our New Verona Range and Review

Most of you have been following this journey we've been on over the past few months of completely remodeling the kitchen in our new home. We turned what was the original dining room and part of the kitchen seen below in to a much more open kitchen area and we are so happy we did. It took a lot of planning and researching the products that we have used in our kitchen space.
(before)
(after)

One thing that we were sure of was that we wanted a professional oven range and it had to be 36 inches. We also didn't have the square footage to add in built in double ovens so we would have to figure out a way to incorporate that in to the design. The problem that most of you know, is that professional ranges are so expensive and then you throw in a double oven, GULP!
Not to mention, the reviews on most of the more popular mainstream brands leave a lot to be desired. So what to do? I mean in all honesty, we didn't have $8000-$10,000 in our budget for a range and I was weary of spending less on an off brand that seemed to be made in china by the same companies but with a different name on them. We were stuck.
That is until I found the Verona. They are made in Italy and I honestly couldn't find much information about them at first. After lots of time searching the internet for information, I decided to just search Instagram instead. Thankfully, I found quite a few reviews on the range and I was able to see real life photos!! One of the reviews I read was from The Faux Martha. I have followed her for quite some time on Instagram and after her raving review of her own Verona duel fuel range, which means gas stove top and electric oven, I thought this might actually be the one for us and for far less than the other brands I had been researching.
I finally made up my mind and purchased the Verona 36" double oven with dual fuel and 5 burners. Then I crossed my fingers and hoped and prayed I had made the right choice.
We have had the range for a little over 3 months now and we are so happy with it. I'm actually quite blown away with what an incredible range it really is. The front burners are both 12,000 BTU and the back are 6000. The center is between 1000 to 16,000. If you want power then this is it but with the back burners being just right for lower temps and simmering. The other thing that I noticed with a lot of the other pro ranges was they didn't have timers on them. Okay, so I'm not a professional cook and I wanted a clock and a timer. The oven has multiple settings including a defrost setting and for those that wonder just how much you can fit in the larger oven? Well, we fit our 20lb. turkey in there for Thanksgiving without any issues at all.
Like me, you will probably have to buy new cookie sheets because your standard size won't fit but I found the perfect size at Target with no trouble at all.

Another option with the Verona range is the Chef's Pak.  Watch more about it HERE. The Chef's Pak includes a stainless griddle, spatula, super thick cutting board, electric thermometer, steamer kit, and oven mitt. We love it! The griddle is such a great addition to the range for cooking eggs and I'm sure so much more but if you know me at all, then you know I pretty much want to eat a sunny side up egg on everything these days...Everything!!

We love the steamer because we steam so many vegetables around here and we love seafood so it has been used quite a lot for both.
We are so happy that we decided on the Verona! It has been a such a wonderful addition to the kitchen. It's not only beautiful but works perfectly. We have had zero issues with the range and I don't anticipate any to come in the future. Just a little more information about the range is that we chose the 2" backplate that you can see just behind the burners above. An 8" backplate is another option if you have a combustable wall behind the range like we did here below before the soapstone was installed.  You can compare both photos to see the difference.
I'm hoping this review and information on the Verona Duel Fuel Double Range gave you some of the information you may have been searching for when looking for a new range. I would highly recommend this range and I know that we will continue to use Verona in our homes in the future. I still can't believe that its not as well known in the states yet but hopefully that changes soon.
I saved the best part of this post for last because Verona Appliances has been so kind to partner with me on a giveaway for you all!! Head over to my Instagram account to enter to win your very own Chef's Pak!!

Kitchen Inspiration and Polycor Design

We have been hard at work on this little kitchen of ours and I am so excited to see it in the final stretch to completion. I thought long and hard about how I wanted this space to feel and even though I now would have done a few things differently, I am so happy with how it is shaping up.
Pinterest is always a great source of inspiration for me but one lady in particular that has always been my design spirit animal ( is that really a thing) and in my opinion can do no wrong when it comes to interiors is Ms. Lauren Liess herself.  I have pulled so much inspiration from her past homes and I am doing my best to sprinkle a bit of that magic around this little home of ours starting with the kitchen.
Her use of natural materials is spot on and her design encompasses my passion for a palette of white, black and wood tones with just a bit of nature added in here and there.
It was through Lauren's design that I fell in love with soapstone. I had always thought of myself as a marble only kind of girl but the warmth of the soapstone seemed to be just the right choice for our new home.  I've had this vision of a warm and cozy european kitchen, the kind you can smell bread baking in just by looking at it.  Old and new elements woven together resulting in exactly the right balance of rustic and modern.
This kitchen, is by far my favorite ever posted anywhere on the inter web, and every time I see it I get all the feels. It wasn't until after I started choosing the items for my new kitchen did I realize it was pretty darn close to this one, and I'm pretty sure influencing all my decision making. This is where I fell in love with Alberene Soapstone from Virgina. Seriously, even the runner is just so good!

I contemplated going with a more modern white hood for our range but the more I looked at this image I just couldn't decide. That was until I saw this Kate Marker design (2nd image) below and that pretty much sealed the deal for me.
Perfection!
Once I had settled on the look of the kitchen it was time to start working on sourcing all of the  products. Thankfully, I was able to get in touch with Polycor. They own 30 quarries which are mostly based in the USA and I was able to work with them and choose just the right soapstone for our counter tops and backsplash. Now, because I do love some marble, I also decided on a
White Cherokee marble from Georgia for the top of the island.

Polycor has been a dream to work with and I can't even begin to tell you how beautiful their stones are. I am also so happy to be using a locally (as close to home as possible) sourced product, mined right here in the United States.
Polycor sent all of their stone samples for me to choose from, and even though I was sure I wanted to use the Alberene Soapstone and White Cherokee Marble, it was so awesome to see and feel all of the stones and the different finishes they offer.
Now a little peek at the stone that will be gracing my countertops and backsplash in the next coming week!!
Excuse the grainy pictures but c'mon its still so pretty!!

A toddlers room with Chasing Paper

You may remember my last collaboration with Chasing Paper back when we made over Emma's room here below. I can't say enough about this wallpaper. The quality is so good. Thick paper with an adhesive backing that basically seems like a giant sticker that is so easy to apply to the wall and comes right off. Trust me I'm no pro when it comes to wallpaper but I was able to apply this so easily and even when I messed up a little, I was able to peel it off and start again. A product that allows do overs....I'm loving that all day long!

Last year we received the most adorable personalized sign for Everly from Gingiber and I fell completely in love with this little bunny. So much so, that when I had the opportunity to work with Chasing Paper again this month, I couldn't help but choose the leaping bunnies paper that was created by the founder of Gingiber
The paper arrived and I got to work. Once again it was a breeze to put up. I think it took me a little less than two hours to do this one wall and thats with multiple mom question interruptions!
It really is the sweetest design and Everly has even decided to name each and every bunny before she goes to bed at night. Oh my, it takes awhile!
She loves pink so this was the perfect compromise to this mama who loves her white rooms. I have always believed that my kids rooms should show their own personalities so pink it is! Its such a soft and pretty shade and those bunnies are the cutest.

Because we no longer have a playroom in this house all of her toys are kept in her room. Its pretty wonderful and actually how I grew up. No one had playrooms in the 80's....well not in the town I grew up in anyway, so playing in their rooms seemed like the natural thing for my kids to do. I use a lot of bins and baskets to keep it all neatly tucked away and we also donate all of the old toys to make room for new ones. Besides, I don't know what it is about little girls toys but they are all so teeny tiny I don't need to store any big items. I love that!!

\
Her new little bed has worked out so well. Its wider than a traditional twin bed and has completely stopped the falling out of bed which was happening way too much. Not only that but it also extends to the length of a twin so it will grow with her over time.

It makes my heart so happy to see her little room coming together and I am so happy to work with Chasing Paper again. This paper is such high quality and at a great price too! I really can't wait to add some more to our home in the near future.....now to decide where?!!
